My name is Kyle Forsythe. I’m a mix medium artist from Bozeman Montana. I got into art when I was really young. My mom would paint and draw. That’s when my interest started. My mom was a gambler, addicted to chewing tobacco, and a social drinker. My dad is an alcoholic and was a smoker. My mom would watch Bob Ross the joy of painting episodes on pbs. That’s where I learned how to paint trees and mountains. When I was in elementary school I would draw game characters and Goosebumps book covers. When we started music classes in school. I got the option to take arts and crafts instead, because I had trouble reading music.
I’m inspired by nature, because when I was a kid we would go camping a lot. Nature was basically my daycare. My parents would get drunk with their friends and let us kids play in the mountains with no supervision. My parents have a lot of respect for animals and plants. They taught us to respect nature.
I love animals because they don’t judge you. They only want to live their life in peace. When I was a kid and cried, my dad would tell me “I will give you something to cry about” and then give me a spanking. Other times my parents and their friends would make a joke of it and call me Cryle. The older I got the less I would show my sadness and heartbreak.
In my teenage years I got into skateboarding and snowboarding. Some of my skate and snowboarding friends would do graffiti and photography. I learned spray paint techniques, lighting and shadows. After a little bit I started to experiment with different art mediums. That's when I became a mix medium artist.
When I was in my late teens and early 20s. I got deep into party mode. I would try selling my art, but then I would just give up. I tried different things in my late 20s that I thought would be fun careers. I found out that art was always my calling. In my 30s I started to pursue my art career again. I got into the 2021 SLAM festival, a local event and made a few sales. Then I saw how my art lit people up. It brought me so much joy. I wasn't having much luck with my art after that. I would sell a few stickers. So I gave up again and got back into partying again.
I started to realize I was going down a similar path as my parents. So I quit drinking and focused on my art. I could only go so far being self taught. I went to the European Cultural Academy to figure out what I was doing wrong. I met a bunch of incredible people and learned a lot. That two week course changed my life. I will always keep growing as an artist.
This is my process. It starts with my imagination or a cool photo. I make a ruff sketch of an idea and sometimes it becomes a painting. I use a lot of reference photos and sunsets are a great inspiration for color's.
I use acrylic or spray paint for sky’s and backgrounds. I use oil paint for the foreground. I like the way it gives it dimension. I also like trying new styles and always have fun.
